It appears that poor Lileks was caught in the zone of Cold Denial. This is what happens when something is clearly wrong with you, but not to an extent that's it's definitely and irrevocabaly an illness.

Last Monday afternoon, on our first full day in Shanghai, my throat started to feel a little sore and scratchy. This is how a cold always develops for me: Scratchy throat for two days, then I can put out three-alarm fires using my nostrils. But no problem! I'm not sick! My throat feels weird because I had a greasy lunch!

My rhinoviral-infested tissues beg to differ.
